Does Your Posture Really Matter?

By January 23, 2013Blog, Uncategorized

Did you know that your brain and spinal cord are the only organs in your body that are incased in solid bone? That’s right. The brain is completely incased by the skull and your spinal cord is completely surrounded by the bones of your spine. This simple fact tells scientists a lot about the importance of the brain and spinal cord. Obviously, they play I vital role in the health of the human body.

Your spine and the muscles surrounding it, do something else other than protect the spinal cord. They also provide you with the ability to sit or stand up straight. With out them we would be nothing more than a blob laying on the ground.

If you look at any anatomy book, from any educational institution around the globe, they will all tell you the same thing, “Your spine should be straight from the front, and from the side it should have natural curves.” This alignment from the outside of your body shows up as what we call “posture”. Sure, you can consciously change this posture (momentarily) by engaging certain muscles, but your “resting” or “unconscious posture” will always return. Two different studies, one from the Journal of Spine (one of the most prestigious journals in the world), and the other from The Journal of the American Geriatric Society, both showed “poor posture” or abnormal spinal alignment can take 15 years off of your life span! If that doesn’t tell you posture is important, I don’t know what does. For over a century now chiropractic care has been improving the posture and function of the spine for those who experience it. As you continue through your care plan in our office you will notice drastic improvements in your posture as well as your overall health. Posture is very important, you simply can’t have good health without it!

Yours in Health,
